History

  • 1881
    The first fish processing company was established in Riga, starting a modern era of development of the fish industry, which contributed to the management of fish resources and the development of trade in the Baltic region.
  • 1888
    In St. Petersburg, a special commission awarded Riga sprats with the highest quality opinion.
  • 1911
    The 20 fish processing factories in Latvia produced almost 6 million cans of sprats per year.
  • 1912
    "Baltic Fishermans Central Union" was founded, which contributed to the coordination of resources necessary for the industry and promotion of trade.
  • 1920
    There were 10 fish canning factories in Riga, half of which belonged to Latvian entrepreneurs.
  • 1925
    The Latvian government adopted the "Regulations on the production of canned fish", which stipulated that sprats can only be made from herring or sprats.
  • 1929
    Latvia's export of canned goods reached 1230 tons per year.
  • 1934
    Sprats were exported to more than 30 countries around the world.
  • 1953
    Thanks to the high quality and good taste characteristics, Latvian sprats gained more and more popularity throughout the Soviet Union of that time.
  • 1972
    The Riga Central Fish Pavilion was opened, becoming an important trading point for fish products and also for sprats.
  • 1981
    The Latvian fishing industry experienced great growth, several new production companies were established.
  • 1991
    Upon regaining independence, the Latvian fishing industry underwent privatization, and many companies founded in Soviet times were transformed into private companies.
  • 1996
    The association "Riga Sprats" was founded by uniting 11 companies that produced sprats in oil.
  • 2022
    Latvian fish industry successfully overcame challenges related to global crises, adapted production processes and acquired new export markets, ensuring sustainable growth of the industry.
  • 2024
    Companies in the Latvian fishing industry continue to develop, offering high-quality, innovative products, and paying great attention to the development of sustainable fisheries with the use of local raw materials.
